Five illegal taverns closed in police operation

Five illegal taverns were closed during police operations in the Makause and Marathon informal settlements.

Continuing their efforts to bring a stop to the illegal sale of alcohol, the Primrose police recently closed down five illegal taverns, confiscated volumes of alcohol and arrested five suspects in the Makause and Marathon informal settlements.

The suspects, aged between 22 and 37 years old, were charged with dealing in liquor without a license.

“The arrests were made during two police operations, which saw officers patrolling the informal settlements on foot.

“While on patrol they noticed community members purchasing alcohol at five different establishments,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

At each of the taverns, the officers approached the owners, introduced themselves, and asked to see the establishments’ liquor license.

“None of the owners possessed a liquor license and they were arrested and their taverns closed,” said Maome.
