Speaking to Kathorus MAIL about the purpose of the day, Khumalo said they wanted to celebrate Women’s month in a different way.

“Many women who celebrated Women’s Month expected to receive presents. Very few, if any, gave something away. We wanted to do it differently by giving to the needy children of this underprivileged community. We decided to do it on the last day of the month,” said Khumalo.

Khumalo said she has been doing the same thing (giving to different informal settlements communities food) for the past 25 years.

She added: “Being a woman is not only about your rights as a woman, but also about taking care of your own children and the poor ones from disadvantaged communities.”

Babongiwe Mnyamana, who owns a creche (Babongiwe Day Care) in the community, praised Khumalo for what she did for the comunity.

“This is very good for the children of the community since some of these children sleep on empty stomachs because their parents do not afford to provide them with food,” said Mnyamana.

Vlakplaas is in ward 107 under Clr Thabani Goje who had this to say: “I always encourage people in my ward to have that spirit of giving to those who don’t have. Pastor Khumalo did just that. I wish God can continue to bless her abundantly,” said Goje.

He said he is totally against old people who depend on handouts, saying that such things should be strictly for children who spend most of their time in schools.

“I say this because such good initiatives can stop teenage pregnancy. Older men take advantage of teenagers from poor backgrounds because they are born into parents who can’t afford to provide for them. As a result, they end up engaging in unprotected sex and falling pregnant or get infected with dangerous sexually transmitted infections (STIs),” said Goje.

Khumalo’s project was funded by the National Lottery Commission (NLC).
