Const Maelane urges Buhle Park residents to turn over a new leaf
Const Phunye Maelane recently identified a way to plant trees and hopefully minimise crime in Buhke Park.
Through her gardening project, Mohlakamotala, Const Phunye Maelane, of the Elsburg SAPS, attracted over 150 Buhle Park residents who were eager to join her in her mission to better the community with gardening skills.
In the last six months, Maelane engaged with community members, targeting the youth and adults, urging them to join in the gardening project to minimise loitering, poverty and the pressure to pursue a life of crime.
Once she identified a need to better her community through gardening, she went door-to-door promoting her project.
The group of gardeners recently gathered at Buhle Park Secondary School to begin their gardening tasks.

“The Department of Agriculture donated gardening tools and seeds, allowing project Mohlakamotala to begin,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg police.
“The turnout was great.
“It showed a positive side to the community and its members who were willing to improve their lives and make a difference in their neighbourhood by planting trees.”
Maelane, who initiated the project, is said to have a passion for working with various communities and making a difference in people’s lives.
“She lives to better the lives of those around her, making them happy and making them feel appreciated,” said Phooko.
