In the recent council meeting, a decision was taken to suspend Gugu Pride Malaza as the group chief financial officer (GCFO) of the metro.
“The city manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, issued Gugu Pride Malaza with a letter requesting her to provide reasons as to why she should not be suspended on October 26,” said Motion of No Confidence
“Upon receiving a response from Malaza, the city manager found that there was no basis for her not to be suspended, leading to her official suspension on October 29.”
Malaza has been suspended pending the finalisation of an investigation into alleged non-disclosure of information regarding her dismissal from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as required by Regulation 11 of the Systems Act of 2000.

“Further investigations are currently being conducted by the metro and should be concluded within the next three months,” said Gadebe.
The DA, in Ekurhuleni, has welcomed the suspension of the GCFO.
“As the DA, we have been calling on the metro to take action against Malaza since her controversial appointment early last year,” said Clr Phillip de Lange, DA leader in the metro.
“This suspension follows sustained pressure by the DA.
“Malaza’s questionable past has continuously been highlighted by the DA in council, as we questioned the executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, on why he had not acted on her appointment for more than a year.”
This was one of the DA’s key arguments in the Motion of No Confidence against Masina.

The party also claimed to have previously written to the mayor questioning Malaza’s appointment in light of the pending finalisation of an investigation into the alleged non-disclosure of information surrounding her dismissal from the national broadcaster.
De Lange further stated that the DA has persistently opposed Malaza’s appointment.
In a letter written to the mayor, his party submitted the pending court case to the mayor for his perusal.
“At a council meeting, last year, we voted against her appointment as GCFO on grounds of her pending court case,” said de Lange.
“However, the ANC used its majority to push her appointment through council.
“While we welcome the decision to suspend Malaza, we can’t help but say: I told you so”.
