Metro promises to keep pools open this year
Now all reopened, public pools will be operational six days a week, from Tuesday to Saturday, between 10am and 6pm and on Sunday and public holidays between 2pm and 6pm.
The Ekhuruleni metro has expressed regret for any inconvenience caused with regards to the closure of public swimming pools from December 21 to January 2, incidentally, one of Gauteng’s worst heatwaves.
Spokesperson for the city manager Zweli Dlamini said the metro has consulted with various stakeholders and relevant departments and will seek a new council resolution that will enable them to have the swimming pools open during the festive season this year.
In a statement just before Christmas, member of the mayoral committee for community services councillor Dora Mlambo said the swimming pools would be closed due to the limited number of officials, including lifeguards, available during this time as most have taken leave.
“As such, this may pose a challenge in adhering to basic health and safety requirements at the facilities,” she said.
