The Germiston SAPS has been experiencing high volumes of scams relating to false advertising on social media.
A number of reports filed by residents detail a scam in which fraudulent car dealers advertise cars for sale on their sites or advertise car deals intended for private sales.
“Interested buyers are instructed to send a set amount of money as a deposit, securing the sale of the vehicle before they have physically seen the car,” said Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston police.

“When buyers eventually arrive at the suggested meeting point, they find no one.
“We are appealing to residents to please be alert at all times, and not to fall victim to cyber crimes.
“Do not put down-payments on items you have not seen.”
In most cases, the con artists will not want to meet the buyers until money has been deposited into their account.
These scammers reportedly provide wrong addresses, change their cellphone numbers and disappear upon receiving payments.
