letter to the Editor
I put the blame for the degeneration of morals and lack of respect for the elderly solely on the shoulders of the ANC youth leaders including Julius Malema, Fikile Mbalula and Malusi Gigaba.
We all know how Malema [now the EFF leader] insulted and swore at many older ANC leaders, old enough to be his grandfather. These included respectable leaders such as former president Thabo Mbeki, the late minister Zola Skweyiya and many others.
Today, after learning from these youth leaders how to disrespect their elders, we see more children being disrespectful to their parents. Some children have even gone as far as not only insulting their parents and grandparents in public, they now assault and even murder them.

I appeal to President Cyril Ramaphosa to curtail the rampant bad treatment of the elderly by the youth by introducing laws that protect parents from abuse by their children. The pensioners are the worst affected when it comes to bad treatment by their grandchildren, with many having their pension money forcefully taken away from them.
And with alcohol and dagga freely available to young people, the lack of respect for their parents and the elderly will continue unabated. The government must protect the elderly against violence just as it protects the rights of women and children against violence and abuse.
