Social media has been abuzz since March with the #Trashtag challenge and local children have jumped on the clean-up wagon.

Gemma Hartnick, from Dawnview, who has been a teacher for over 20 years, led a group of home-schooled children from the area to Potgieter Park, situated on the corner of Main and Comet roads in Fishers’ Hill, to complete the challenge, on Wednesday.

The challenge requires participants to choose an area where they will pick up litter, and then post before and after photos of the completion of the task online, with the hashtag #Trashtag.

“The joys of being around children in this era is that they keep you up to date with what’s happening on social media,” said Gemma.

“When they suggested this challenge, I thought it a great idea to learn about keeping our environment clean and maybe if community members saw us picking up litter, they’d be inspired to keep their surroundings and parks clean too.”
