Residential and business break-ins on the rise in Katlehong

The most targeted are homes, churches, schools and businesses, such as groceries stores, tuck shops, electrical appliances, computer equipment and television stores.

The station commander of Katlehong North SAPS, Col Raymond Buthelize, raised concerns about the increase of break-ins at residential and business premises around Katlehong due to the rainy weather.

According to Katlehong North SAPS communications officer Capt Lesetja Mathobela, criminals who commit these crimes make rounds in different sections in Katlehong.

Mathobela said criminals develop new ways to confuse and rob people. The most targeted are homes, churches, schools and businesses, such as groceries stores, tuck shops, electrical appliances, computer equipment and television stores.

Anyone with information relating to the reported incidents of house break-in, business and theft of motor vehicles may contact the Katlehong North SAPS on 011 960 0001, 072 564 7446 or 086 001 0111.

Safety tips

• Always ensure doors and windows are properly closed and locked. A window left half open can create an opportunity for criminals to gain entrance.

• Never buy stolen or suspected stolen property. This creates a market for a set of stolen goods and encourages thieves to continue with criminal activities.

• Make a list of the serial numbers of all electronic equipment and electrical appliances and keep it in a safe place as it can assist with the identification of recovered stolen property.

• We urge neighbours to be vigilant and look out for each others’ property, especially when premises are left unattended.

• Report any suspicious or criminal activities.

• Do not report false cases and do not take the law into your own hands.
