MEL welcomes principal
“I always say, if a teacher can change the life of one learner in a year he had a successful year,” said Engelbrecht.
MEL International Schools welcomed its new principal, Cornelius Engelbrecht, who has in the teaching profession for over 25 years.
“I’m excited to be part of the school and hope I can bring in some changes that will take the school into even higher standards,” said the principal. Engelbrecht has been at the school for only two weeks, but he already has ideas for the school.
“My three goals at the moment are I would like to improve the pass rate, as I want 100 per cent pass rate come the end of the year. I want to work on the discipline of the entire school, from my staff all the way to the learners. I would love to introduce culture into the school,” said Engelbrecht.
He said he wants learners, teachers and parents to be proud of the school. Engelbrecht’s teaching career started in Springs in 1987. His last school was GEMS International School in Kampala, Uganda. He said his father planted the seed for him to become a teacher.
“I grew up in a house where my father was a teacher. “As a teacher, you can really change the lives of learners.
“I always say if a teacher can change the life of one learner in a year he had a successful year,” said Engelbrecht.
He said he looks forward to working with the community, parents and the school.
“Parents and teachers should expect consistency, open-mindedness, an out-of-the-box management style and complete transparency. “Also, a school cannot survive without the involvement of the community. “MEL International commits itself to deliver well-balanced, well-educated young grown-ups to the community,” said Engelbrecht.
He said he would love to introduce some sport and other activities. “Education is a holistic approach. “You need to focus on all the aspects of a child’s life, academic and sport. Because combined they help a child to thrive,” said Engelbrecht.

The founder of the school, Mariam Kawoma, said they are excited to have Engelbrecht in the MEL family. “We are excited to have Mr Engelbrecht join the MEL family. “We are looking forward to all the exciting things he will be bringing into the school. “We are 100 per cent behind him,” said Kawoma.
She said MEL’s vision is to provide an international standard learner. “We want to bring an innovative type of learning and encourage our learners to be out-of-the-box thinkers. “Because times are changing and the traditional way of learning is not the best way any more, we need to adapt. We believe our new principal will help the school to achieve that goal,” said Kawoma.
MEL was established in 2012 and started as a pre-school and now goes up to high school.
