Be alert and avoid being victims of crime

Katlehong North SAPS media liaison officer Capt Lesetja Mathobela warned that hijacking is on the rise in Katlehong North.

Mathobela shared safety tips to assist the community to protect themselves against criminals.

Safety tips

• Drive with closed windows and locked doors at all times.
• Keep a good following distance while driving and stopping.
• Park in well-lit areas/garages.
• Never pick up a hitchhiker.
• Don’t leave the key in the ignition when unlocking a gate or garage door.
• Always be on the lookout for suspicious-looking vehicles and pedestrians loitering at intersections and driveways.

All types of vehicles are targeted and most vehicles that are recovered are from other suburbs. Safety starts with you, avoid buying stolen motor parts.

Mathobela said police recovered some vehicles but they had already been stripped.

“A person who is found in possession of the stolen property will be arrested. All scrap yards should have a record of all items at their business site,” said Mathobela.

The Katlehong North SAPS station commander, Col Raymond Buthelezi, pleaded with the community to avoid buying stolen items.

Residents are urged to report any information that can lead to the arrest of suspects who commit crimes in their area.
