Katlehong Athletics Club’s 31km run returns

The annual Katlehong Athletics Club 31km run will return on December 31, aimed at collecting school shoes.
The shoes will be collected on behalf of the underprivileged learners.
Any member of the community can contribute by making a monetary donation or purchasing a pair of school shoes to donate.
Hloni Motloung, the chairperson of Katlehong Athletics Club, said runners will assemble at Ramokonupi East on Sontonga Road (opposite Somhlolo Ground and Ramokonupi Clinic) to run the 10km, 21km and 31km, starting at 05:00.

In 2020, the project took place through virtual platforms because of strict lockdown regulations.
“As we put plans in place to run this year, we continue to request the running community to adhere to government regulations and vaccinate. Covid-19 protocols will be observed.
“We also request runners to wear bright and reflective clothing to increase visibility on the road,” said Motloung.
“December is a time for families and friends to reconnect, travel and for people to recuperate.
“It is also the time people used to ponder about plans, finances, education and health. It is in this spirit that we continue to ask you to spare a thought for those underprivileged learners returning to school next year.
“The club will collect school shoes throughout December.
“The club approaches school principals every January to help in identifying learners who require school shoes, the donation is made to the schools through the principals who will ensure deserving learners benefit from this programme.”
He added that school shoes are symbolic of pride and give confidence to young learners, knowing that they can walk to school in comfort, as opposed to barefoot.
“We believe a new pair of shoes should be tough enough to protect a young child’s feet, whether it is on the playground, on the sports field or even walking home in the middle of winter.
“Everyone will be also taking part in the run to end the year with a great start for the future. For those who are not so keen to run, don’t worry. We got you covered. We will run on your behalf.
“The only request is a donation of R100 or donate a pair of school shoes.”
