Held on November 16, the day saw the men’s final take place between Edenvale Bowling Club and Avion.

Committee member Raymond Pieters said it was an epic battle between two highly motivated and equally matched teams.

“The bowls played between Edenvale and Avion was of the highest calibre and the lead changed to the 18th end,” said Pieters.

Going into the final, Edenvale led by two shots. Avion fought to the end and picked up the required two shots to peel the game.

This meant a 19th super end of eight bowls had to be played.

“The game was finally decided on the final bowl with Edenvale’s pair Thys Kotze and Francois Brown winning by two shots.”

Further congratulations went to Edenvale’s lady’s pair of Lolly Reed and Lynda Hopkins who shone and claimed the silver medal.

Reed and Hopkins were beaten by Benoni Country Club.

Pieters said Jenny Jones (lady’s veteran), Gerald May (men’s veteran) and Elizanne du Toit (lady’s junior) of Edenvale Bowling Club were all invited to represent Ekurhuleni at the Masters next year.

The masters will take place at The Western Province Cricket Club in March.

Hoping to attract community members to the club, Pieters highlighted that the Bowls is great for coordination, concentration and a wonderful new challenge.

“Bowls is the one sport where all ages and gender can compete on equal terms,” he said.

All ages are welcome. Practice bowls are available at the club. All that is necessary is a pair of flat shoes no heels are allowed on the greens.

“TABS during the week and over weekends is popular with those who prefer to take a break from competitive bowls and just have fun, socialise on the greens and have a cold one afterwards.”
