Dawnview High embraces cultural diversity

“The event was run by the learners, from designing the programme to running it.”

Dawnview High School hosted a vibrant Heritage Day celebration on October 16 in the school hall, highlighting the cultural diversity of its students.

The event featured various traditional dances and performances representing different heritages, with students taking the lead in organising and presenting the programme.

Initially planned for September, the event was postponed due to the school break.

Teacher Brenda Mhlanga emphasized the importance of acknowledging the school’s diverse student body, stating, “As a multi-racial school, it’s vital that we celebrate everyone.”

The celebration, run entirely by the students, included a media team covering the event and opportunities for young talent to shine on stage.

“We are essentially training future journalists while giving learners a platform to showcase their skills,” said Mhlanga.

The day also served as a fundraising initiative, featuring traditional dishes for sale and a “best dressed” competition, with students from grades 8 to 11 competing for the title.
