Germiston community unites to clean up after squatters evicted

The cleanup, aimed at reclaiming the environment and addressing safety concerns, saw community members tackling waste left behind.

Germiston residents, supported by AfriForum Germiston, rallied to clean up the open space behind Medicross Germiston after it was left in disarray following the eviction of squatters.

The cleanup, aimed at reclaiming the environment and addressing safety concerns, saw community members tackling waste left behind.

“The situation has been challenging for the community. This effort showcases the power of unity.

“We’re not just cleaning; we’re reclaiming our pride and sense of community,” said Wessel Raddyn, head of safety at AfriForum Germiston.

Residents noted the squatter camp emerged months ago, causing concerns over a damaged water pipe that led to significant water wastage.

The city’s water department eventually repaired the pipe, and on October 31, the EMPD and SAPS evicted the squatters.

A follow-up operation on November 6 removed informal structures.

Despite these efforts, some squatters returned, prompting the community to organise the cleanup to restore safety and cleanliness.

“The community has shown what can be achieved when we work together. Now, we need sustained support to ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Raddyn added.

He also thanked local businesses for their contributions to the initiative, including SWS Security, Graphite Security, Alf’s Tippers, and the Parks Department.

After the clean up the area was cleared of all rubble.

“Their involvement shows they genuinely care about the community,” said Raddyn.

Residents remain committed to safeguarding their neighbourhoods and advocating for long-term solutions to prevent similar issues in the future.
