It is believed that the firearm used in the shooting of a Primrose Primary School principal, who was injured, belonged to the parent of the boy accused of the shooting.

Gauteng Education reported the 51-year-old principal of Primrose Primary School is recovering from his injuries.

It was previously reported that a Grade Six learner (13) allegedly shot and injured the principal at about 08.45 on February 16.

In a statement issued by the Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane, the GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona said before the shooting, the principal saw learners sitting in the foyer. He instructed them to take out their workbooks to study.

“The Grade Six boy allegedly mumbled something in response, but the principal ignored him. He saw the learner later near the staff room, which is when he was shot,” said Mabona.

The principal was transported to a local medical facility for necessary treatment.

“Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident,” said Mabona.

“The police have launched an investigation to establish the origin of the firearm, which has been seized by the police. The teenager is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate Court soon on a charge of attempted murder,” Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi told Germiston City News.

Mabona said the GDE’s psycho-social support unit will visit the school on February 19 to provide counselling and trauma support.

“We are taken aback by the nature of this incident and how it occurred,” said Chiloane.

“We will be invoking necessary disciplinary action against the learner, while also monitoring the principal’s condition to ensure that he returns to full health. Our plea is for parents to not refrain from instilling discipline in their children.”
