Two men in court over Germiston Home Affairs fire and public violence charges

Two suspects linked to the torching of the Germiston Home Affairs office appeared in court this week, facing serious charges stemming from the August 12 incident.

Two men, Mofart Phiri and Katlego Simango, appeared before the Germiston Magistrates’ Court on charges of arson and public violence in connection with the torching of the Department of Home Affairs’ Germiston local office on Tuesday, August 12.

Phiri, a Zimbabwean national represented by Advocate Tshepo Kapa, reportedly lost his passport during recent evictions in Pharoe Park.

Simango, a South African national, represented by Attorney Tebogo Chauke, previously faced an assault charge which was withdrawn.

The court heard that Phiri has no prior charges, no outstanding warrants and is not considered a flight risk.

Simango also has no pending cases.

Prosecutors allege the two were present at a meeting where plans to set the Home Affairs office alight were discussed.
The matter has been postponed to August 19, for a possible formal bail hearing.
