WATCH: Germiston Home Affairs fire: 3 remain in custody on arson charges

Three men linked to the fire that gutted Germiston’s Home Affairs office will stay in custody after their bail application was delayed pending address verification.

Three men accused of torching the Germiston Home Affairs appeared before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on charges of arson and public violence.

The accused, Mofart Phiri, Katlego Simango and Given Mlambo, stood jointly charged after the August 12 blaze that destroyed the government building.

Phiri, a Zimbabwean national, faces an additional charge of illegal immigration in terms of Section 49 of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002.

Mlambo, the third suspect, joined the proceedings on Thursday and was represented by Advocate Tshepo Kapa.

Their bail application could not proceed after the state informed the court that the home addresses of all three accused were still unverified.

Magistrate Baloyi postponed the matter to August 27 ordering that the men remain in custody until the next hearing.
