Germiston motorist arrested for possession of suspected stolen cables

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) has arrested a motorist in Germiston after officers discovered suspected stolen aluminium cables in his vehicle.

The EMPD has confirmed the arrest of a 34-year-old motorist in Germiston found with suspected stolen cables on August 27.

According to EMPD, officers from the Anti-Cable Theft Southern Region Unit were conducting routine patrols in response to ongoing cable theft incidents in the area. At around 19:30 they stopped a Hyundai H100 on Victoria Road after noticing suspicious activity.

A search of the vehicle uncovered three 20-metre lengths of aluminium cables. When asked to provide documentation proving ownership, the driver failed to do so.

The suspect was arrested and detained at the Germiston Police Station, where he is facing charges of possession of suspected stolen essential infrastructure.

He is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

The EMPD said it remains committed to clamping down on infrastructure-related crimes, which have a severe impact on service delivery and the local economy.
