Police arrest Germiston suspect after chase and firearm recovery

An intelligence-led police operation in Germiston led to the arrest of a suspect and the seizure of an unlicensed firearm.

A 36-year-old suspect was arrested on January 26 following an intelligence-driven operation by members of SAPS Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence, Germiston Crime Prevention, and SAPS Germiston Vispol.

Police acted on information regarding a suspect allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm at a residence on Keswick Road, Germiston.

“Upon arrival at the address, the suspect noticed the approaching police officers and fled towards an open field,” said Ekurhuleni district communications officer, Neldah Sekgobela.

During the chase, the suspect dropped a 9mm pistol, along with a magazine containing eight live rounds of ammunition.

The suspect was apprehended shortly thereafter. Further inspection revealed that the firearm’s serial number had been filed off.

He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and is currently being detained at SAPS Germiston, pending his court appearance.

The SAPS Ekurhuleni district commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, commended the members involved for their swift response and dedication, highlighting that such operations play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of community members.
