City awarded by Rand Water for excellent performance
The awards from Africa’s largest bulk water utility come on the back of the city’s remarkable achievement in securing three consecutive clean audits from the office of the Auditor General of South Arica.
Rand Water observed its 120 Legacy Celebration and awards recently at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton, and the City of Ekurhuleni’s continuous outstanding performance took centre stage.
Ekurhuleni’s overall management of providing quality drinking water and unwavering efforts of sufficient water supply to its customers continues to be a clear benchmark for other municipalities in Gauteng.
The city’s Water and Sanitation Department lifted two awards – the water wise and the bulk water distribution awards.

The water wise award was presented by RW to a customer that has shown evidence of long-term regular water-saving education and awareness campaigns in communities, schools, and the public through various platforms.
The bulk water distribution award was presented to municipalities or entities that show outstanding water operations and maintenance programmes.
These programmes includes:
• Timeous reporting of leaks to the relevant district or Rand Water official.
• Satisfactory turnaround time for planned supply interruptions on municipal infrastructure.
• Consistent participation in monthly joint meter reading activities.
• Assisting RW with lead detections and formalising illegal connections.
• Consistent participation and engagement with the entity.
• Adequate and consistent communication of water supply interruptions within the municipal area of jurisdiction.
• Compliance to all required water management strategies.

This was followed by four awards for excellent governance, which the city received at the Inaugural Municipal Audit Awards by the South African Local Government Association a few months ago.
“We are a city that is hard at work and we always put our best foot forward when it comes to servicing the people of Ekurhuleni and business alike,” said city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi when she received the awards from the water department.
“Ekurhuleni is not among the top metros in the country for nothing, but excellence in the way we discharge our mandate to provide a better life for all.”
“Well done to everyone who made this possible, this should be a motivation to the rest of the staff to work even harder. Together let us continue to transform the city,” said Mashazi.
