Victoria Lake Club paddlers gear up for sprint championships

Paddlers from VLC have been training and preparing for this championship. Esti van Tonder organised the Sprint Trilogy.

Victoria Lake Club will this year again host the South African Sprint Championships on March 23 to 25, at Germiston Lake.

The championship was also hosted in 2023.

“Sprints are the canoeing Olympic Discipline and therefore a highly prestigious internationally recognised sport,” said Jennie Dallas, Gauteng Canoe Union media/PR.

Gauteng paddlers are looking forward to the exciting upcoming South African Sprint Championship and selection for international team participation.

Paddlers from VLC have been training and preparing for this championship. Esti van Tonder organised the Sprint Trilogy.

Van Tonder, who has coached sprinting at Victoria Lake and has participated in numerous international sprint championships, is focusing on preparing paddlers to be selected on merit, for the Olympic team, including local resident, Helen Jansen van Rensburg who has trained with her and is a member at the Victoria Lake Canoe club and a well-recognised sprinter.

The Trilogy Sprint event was a three-part series of races to help prepare paddlers for the upcoming South African Sprint Championships race.

The male winner of the Sprint Trilogy was Dawid Gerber who was among the top achievers in the 2023 championships at Germiston Lake together with Nick Weeks and Henry van der Walt.

Esti van Tonder and Helen Jansen van Rensburg were the top female achievers in the 2023 event.
