One dies, mother and son hospitalised for suspected food poisoning

A 38-year-old mother and her 4-year-old son from Alexandra are receiving treatment at Edenvale Hospital after a suspected food-borne illness, the Gauteng Department of Health confirmed.
The family’s 10-year-old daughter passed away shortly after being rushed to the Alexandra Community Health Centre on November 2.
As investigations continue, authorities are raising awareness about food safety amid a rise in food-borne illness cases, especially among children.

The Gauteng Department of Health, in collaboration with local municipalities, is working to increase vigilance in townships, informal settlements, and hostel communities.
The department urges the public to follow safety guidelines when purchasing food, including buying only from reputable vendors, checking expiry dates, ensuring packaging is intact, and reporting health violations.
To report non-compliance, the public can contact environmental health practitioners at local municipal offices.
