On January 22, Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza visited Graceland Education Centre in Germiston as part of his annual back-to-school campaign.
Accompanied by MMC for Community Service Bridget Thusi, the visit aimed to monitor the progress of teaching and learning while strengthening ties with schools.
Graceland learners greeted the mayor with excitement as he celebrated the school’s academic excellence, bringing gifts of school shoes for learners in need.

Addressing the learners, Xhakaza emphasised the transformative power of education.
“Education is the key to unlocking your dreams and creating a better future. Stay focused, respect your teachers, and commit to your goals,” he urged.
The mayor also encouraged learners to prioritise their studies over distractions, highlighting the importance of avoiding risky behaviours.
“Your books are your stepping stones to success. Focus on building a strong foundation for your future,” he said.
Drawing inspiration from the popular song Biri Marung, Xhakaza introduced the motto Booka Marung—”Books first.”
Recognising the school’s achievements, the mayor commended principal Nditsheni Ratshili and the dedicated staff for their hard work, particularly in preparing matric learners for their exams.

“Your commitment to nurturing young minds is evident in the school’s outstanding results. Thank you for shaping tomorrow’s leaders,” said Xhakaza.
The visit also included the donation of school shoes to ensure no child is excluded from education due to a lack of resources.
“No learner should face barriers to education because of basic necessities,” Xhakaza added.
As a gesture of hope, the mayor planted a tree of remembrance on the school grounds, symbolizing resilience and growth.
The tree was named Tintswalo in honour of the school’s over 30 years of existence and likened to a child born during South Africa’s dawn of democracy.
The Department of Health and Love Life participated in the event, offering health talks and providing services through a mobile unit stationed at the school.
Graceland High School, renowned for its consistent academic achievements, continues to serve as a beacon of hope in Ekurhuleni.
