Fundraiser held to benefit Germiston SPCA

According to Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro, the donations will help the local SPCA secure much-needed resources to continue its mandate.

Ward 36 and 92 councillors hosted a fundraising event on March 8 at Howe Circle for the Germiston SPCA.

This event followed a disturbing video that circulated on social media, showing two dogs found in critical condition on a local property by members of the animal welfare organisation.

The dogs appeared severely injured, and by the end of the day, they had to be put down.

According to Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro, the donations will help the local SPCA secure much-needed resources to continue its mandate.

“Due to the recent viral video, we decided to host this fundraiser, as the SPCA urgently needs resources.

“The donations included pet food, monetary contributions, blankets, and resellable items, as the SPCA operates a container shop to sell books and furniture to raise funds,” said Guerreiro.

“We encourage the community to continue supporting the SPCA. Residents should also be aware of their neighbours’ pets and report any unusual conditions to the SPCA or councillors.

“Unfortunately, the two dogs in the video had to be put down, but with adequate resources, the SPCA can save more animal lives.

Their vehicle needs servicing, as it is constantly giving them problems. They rely on it to reach all the areas they serve.

“We usually host this fundraiser in winter, but the need arose earlier this year.

“Residents started dropping off donations as early as nine o’clock in the morning, and their commitment lifted our spirits. Donations included crocheted blankets and pet food,” said Guerreiro.

“Our community has always been a pillar of strength and support for the SPCA, and for that, we thank them. For more details on how to assist the organisation, check their Facebook page or contact me at 071 899 8646.”

Residents from near and far came to donate, including Howe Gardens residents Sandy Troedson and Patricia Loubser, who brought their three-year-old dog, Frosty, adopted from the Benoni SPCA.

Troedson donated 10 crocheted blankets. For the past two years, she has supported the Benoni and Edenvale SPCAs with similar donations.
