City of Ekurhuleni launches food safety programme for school vendors

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is currently hosting school food safety training workshops for school hawkers to equip them with critical knowledge on hygiene, lawful trading, supplier awareness, and the identification of counterfeit products.

The workshops were held at Germiston City Hall and Ntsikana Primary School in Daveyton on May 22.

The city’s environmental health practitioners and EMPD by-law and compliance officers conducted these workshops.

Through these sessions, school food hawkers are empowered with knowledge on how to apply for trading permits, obtain certificates of acceptability, and understand proper food handling practices.

The awareness campaign highlights five keys to safer food, which are:
• Keep clean
• Separate raw and cooked
• Cook thoroughly
• Keep food at safe temperatures, and
• Use safe water and ingredients

These practices play a vital role in preventing food-borne illnesses and ensuring the health and safety of learners.

This awareness campaign reinforces the city’s commitment to creating a culture of food safety in every school.
