Pharoe Park evictions proceed as city follows up on Germiston Home Affairs fire (video)

City urges calm and cooperation amid volatile Pharoe Park evictions and ongoing Germiston fire investigation; two arrests made, says city spokesperson

Court-ordered evictions in Pharoe Park, Germiston, continued on Tuesday, August 12, as the City of Ekurhuleni also issued an update on the suspected arson attack at the Department of Home Affairs building earlier in the day.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) confirmed it is enforcing a court order to remove unlawful occupants from low-cost rental units in Pharoe Park.

Officers remain on site to maintain law and order and ensure the eviction process is conducted within legal boundaries.

Earlier today, at around 9:00, firefighters responded to a blaze at the Department of Home Affairs in Germiston.

The second floor fire was contained before it could spread further and no injuries were reported.

Arson is suspected, and a full investigation will begin once the building is fully secured.

Phakamile Mbengashe, Head of Department for Communications, Marketing and Tourism at the City of Ekurhuleni, said:
“We condemn in the strongest terms any acts of violence, destruction of public property or intimidation. Unfortunately, the situation has become volatile. Two people were arrested. We call on all residents to remain calm, allow emergency and law enforcement services to carry out their duties, and to raise any grievances through peaceful and lawful channels.”
