Mother donkey and foal rescued near N3, now receiving treatment

The Germiston Bedfordview SPCA rescued a mother donkey and her foal found wandering near the N3 in Spruitview. Both are now receiving veterinary care, and the SPCA is appealing for donations to support their recovery.

The Germiston Bedfordview SPCA welcomed two unexpected new residents last week: a mother donkey and her foal, found wandering near the N3 in Spruitview.

The duo was attended to after the animal welfare centre received multiple reports about stray animals.

Their team embarked on a two-day search, which included a midnight effort when the donkeys decided to go on a moonlit stroll. By the following morning, they were safely located and transported to the SPCA.

“On arrival, our team discovered that the mother had a sore leg and a raw wound on her neck, likely caused by being tied up. The team from Germiston Veterinary Hospital promptly administered antibiotics and pain relief, cleaned the wound, and provided ongoing treatment,” said Nkosingiphiwe Sibiya, manager of the SPCA.

“State veterinarians will continue to monitor both donkeys with weekly follow-ups. They arrived looking rough and unkempt.

“It was clear that they hadn’t been groomed and their hooves needed attention. They’ve since received some much-needed care, and a farrier came to trim their hooves.”

“Donkeys consume up to 2% of their body weight in food daily, and with ongoing veterinary care and farrier services, costs can quickly accumulate.

“We invite members of the public to support their recovery through donations, ensuring these gentle animals receive the care they deserve,” said Sibiya.
