Germiston SPCA inspectors rescued several dogs kept in a cramped metal box after repeated warnings to the owner were ignored.

The Germiston Bedfordview SPCA rescued several dogs following a complaint from a member of the public about animals being kept in a small metal box.

Following the report, Inspector Nkosingiphiwe Sibiya, general manager of the Germiston Bedfordview SPCA and trainee inspector George Kekana conducted an investigation at the property.

“The owner removed the dogs from the horrendous metal box whilst our inspectors were present, but follow-up investigations found that the animals had been put back in these extremely unacceptable conditions,” said Sibiya.

According to Sibiya, it appeared that the owner had no intention of improving the living conditions of the animals.

A warrant was obtained from the Germiston Magistrates’ Court, and inspectors Sibiya and Kekana, accompanied by kennel manager and field officer Gama, as well as members of the Elsburg SAPS, returned to the property.

“Upon arrival, the dogs were still being kept in the small metal box, with insufficient space to move around.

“A criminal case will be laid against the owner for contravening the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.

“The SPCA reminds the public that keeping animals in conditions that cause suffering or distress is a criminal offence, and urges anyone who suspects animal cruelty to report it immediately,” said Sibiya.
