Man dies in early morning shack fire in Mandela informal settlement

"Tragically, the body of an unidentified male was discovered inside the structure."

The City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services responded to a distress call on Sunday, following reports of a shack fire in the Mandela informal settlement, Katlehong.

The call came in at about 03:23. Firefighters from the Thokoza Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, they found one shack fully engulfed in flames, which the crew extinguished.

“Tragically, the body of an unidentified male was discovered inside the structure. He was declared deceased on the scene by the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services. The body has since been handed over to Forensic Pathology Services.

“The cause of the fire remains unknown and is under investigation. The scene has been handed over to the SAPS for further inquiry,” said CoE official Tikkie MacDonald.

Residents are reminded that in the event of life-threatening emergencies in Ekurhuleni, they should contact the city’s life-threatening emergency call centre on 011 458 0911.
