Residents and motorists are urged to exercise caution around Power Road and Railway Street in Germiston following a factory fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning.

According to DEMS, oil believed to be diesel flowed from the burning property into the stormwater system, igniting flames along its route and creating hazardous conditions in the surrounding area.

Fire crews responded promptly and successfully extinguished the blaze. Investigations into the cause of the fire are under way, with a full report from the fire department still pending.

DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said several factors would be considered during the investigation.

“At this stage, all we know is that the fire originated inside the factory. Thick, dark smoke affected nearby businesses,” he said. “The first team on scene did an excellent job containing the fire and systematically extinguishing the flames.”

Authorities have advised the public to remain vigilant and to avoid the area where possible until it is declared safe and reopened to traffic.
