Nineteen primary school learners received pre-hospital medical treatment after the scholar transport they were travelling in was involved in a crash with a light hatchback on the M7 Road in the Tsietsi section, just outside Katlehong.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) fire and rescue officers received the call at 06:55 on July 29 about a scholar transport vehicle involved in a crash and immediately responded to the scene.

Two teams from the Zonkizizwe and Palm Ridge fire stations responded swiftly to carry out the necessary life-saving rescue operations.

“A VW microbus, which is designed to carry 10 people, had 20 occupants at the time, including the driver.

“It was involved in a crash with a Honda Jazz, which had four occupants, including the driver,” said DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi.

“All occupants from both vehicles received medical treatment at the scene from paramedics before being transported to the nearest medical facilities within the City of Ekurhuleni. Four pupils were reported to be in a serious but stable condition, while the rest sustained minor injuries.

“Unfortunately, during the crash, two learner pedestrians were also injured. They were allegedly standing next to the road waiting for their transport to school. Both sustained minor injuries and were also taken to hospital.

“The M7 Road had to be temporarily closed to traffic for the duration of the rescue operation. The scene was later handed over to City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers for investigation,” said Ntladi.
