The Gauteng Legislature Education Portfolio Committee recently donated books to Ezibeleni School for Physically Disabled Children in commemoration of September as National Literacy Month.
The Katlehong-based institution’s principal, Mendy Welcome, said 92 books were handed over, with additional books to be delivered later.
He acknowledged the efforts by the Gauteng legislature to bolster the school library with literature focused on disability, identity, personal development and social inclusion.

“The handover event brought together learners, educators, school governing body members, district officials and parliamentary representatives,” said Welcome, adding that this was a step towards equipping the disadvantaged.
Committee chairperson Moipone Khero Mhlongo said during her address that the selected books will encourage learners to embrace their identities, understand bodily changes as they grow and advocate for others.
“Being physically different needs to be embraced as it is not a limitation, though others are physically limited in doing some activities,” said Mhlongo.
“The selection also aligns with various educational curricula the school offers. This comes at a critical time given South Africa’s national literacy challenges.”
