Trucks should be banned from the highways at peak times

No trucks at peak periods equals a better traffic flow.

Dietmar Weise, Germiston, writes:

I moved to Germiston a few months ago and what a nightmare it is travelling home from Midrand on the N3 highway.

On several occasions I have counted an average of 15 trucks, where one can see 1km ahead.

These trucks are three to four car lengths long and that means 15 trucks take 45 to 60 car spaces, during peak time freeway traffic, per kilometre.

Trucks travel in any lane of the highway and it’s no use to talk of fast lanes, because they don’t exist anymore, even in non-peak hours.

Where are the signs along the freeways which said “Keep left, Pass right”?

They have all disappeared.

I have driven next to a truck transporting scrap metal during normal hours, on the uphill before the Germiston off-ramp.

The truck was fully loaded, with a speed of 20km/h in the second lane from the right.

It would be wonderful to travel without trucks on our freeways during peak hours.

This would probably mean 1 125 to 1 500 more car spaces on the N3 from the M1 to the Germiston off- ramp.
