VLC’s night race coming up

Last training race for the Dusi coming up.

The Victoria Lake Canoe Club are set to host their annual night race.

The race will be held on February 4, at Germiston Lake, and will serve as the last opportunity for canoeists to refine their racing and portaging techniques for the world’s toughest endurance canoeing event, the Dusi Canoe Marathon.

The night race is also the last Gauteng Canoe Union race before the athletes head down to Pietermaritzburg to tackle the Dusi.

It will be a final short event, with a bit of portaging thrown in, to test all the partnerships and crews set up for the doubles year.

The official prize winning categories for the event will be based on doubles, or K2s, and not singles.

The event is normally eagerly contested by Gauteng’s top crews, trying to establish a psychological advantage ahead of the marathon.

The format of the race is 15km, comprising five times 3km laps, each with a short portage.

It is a K2 race but K3s and K1s are welcome, and entry fees vary due to age.

Registration time is at 5pm and the race will start at 6.30pm.

Medals will be awarded to all finishers and gold medals to all category winners.

Free meals and surprise giveaways will be given to the first 150 entrants.
