Top positions for Germiston Callies athletes

Local athletes excel at the Karoo Ultramarathon Race.

Germiston Callies’ athletes put their training and fitness to the test at the Karoo Ultramarathon race held on October 3 in Laingsburg, Western Cape.

“The 80km race had a new route this year which proved to be much tougher than the previous route,” said one of Germiston Callies’ committee members, Victor Mhlakaza.

Thulane Magagula, Zwelithini Vaphi, Headman Magadeni and Abram Hugo were the four athletes from the local club.

“All the athletes finished the race in the top 10,” explained Mhlakaza.

“Magagula finished second in five hours and 35 minutes; Vaphi finished in five hours and 56 minutes in fifth place but first in the 40 to 49 years category.

“Magadeni placed sixth in six hours and 13 minutes with Hugo in seventh place in a time of six hours and 25 minutes.

“Magagula has had a good year as he placed 22 at the Comrades Marathon earlier this year.

“Well done to all the athletes, they did well and made us proud.”

Mhlakaza said the trip to the Western Cape wouldn’t have been possible without funding.

“Thanks to B-Arch Africa Architects for sponsoring the guys with the transport to go down to the race,” he said.

“The sponsorship made it possible for me to drive down with the guys and support them on the tough route.

“A special thank you to the club for helping athletes participate in some of the major races like Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon, especially under the difficult conditions the club went through this year where one of their races was cancelled at the last moment due to it clashing with another event.

“We appeal to all businesses and community members for any donation or sponsorship, it would greatly be appreciated.

“This would help the club continue supporting local athletes to achieve at top level events.”
