Mayor officially launches Kings of Diski Mayoral Challenge

Football to be showcased at Easter weekend tournament.

“One of my greatest passions is soccer and what it reflects in our communities.

“Soccer, for many of us who come from the townships, isn’t just a sport, but a culture, lifestyle and our heritage.

“Through soccer we learned how to socialise with our peers, keep away from substance abuse, build and strengthen friendships and develop a culture of collectivism and teamwork,” said executive mayor of Ekurhuleni Clr Mzwandile Masina passionately at the launch of the Kings of Diski Mayoral Challenge.

The official launch took place at the mayor’s parlour at the Germiston Civic Centre, on Wednesday.

The much anticipated football tournament is set to start on April 14 at Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton.

“The Kings of Diski Mayoral Challenge is an initiative dear to my heart and its one project that as the city, we intend on elevating to greater heights,” said Masina.

“It’s a tournament for the people, by the people.”

Football legends, such as Jerry Skhosana and Pollen Ndlanya, expressed their gratitude to the metro as many legends have become instrumental in the organising of the game and scouting new talent in their communities.

Off-season games are now an integral part of the sports calendar in various communities within the metro.
