Lucky win for Germiston

Coach Sreten not impressed with Germiston’s display of football.

In the latest Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League fixture Germiston City Football Club clashed against Linhill Celtic Football Club.

The first team’s frenzied game kicked-off at 3.30pm on Saturday at the Germiston City Sports Grounds.

Germiston capitalised on an early shot-on-target made possible by a corner kick.

Carlo Buthelezi headed the ball straight into the net, bypassing Linhill’s goalkeeper.

The momentum from the opening goal soon died out and Germiston failed to increase their lead after three unchallenged scoring opportunities were missed, consecutively.

The teams went into the half-time with a 1-0 score.

Thabang Mohaeka (blue) made the scoreboard as one of the three scorers leading Germiston City Football Club to a 3-2 win against Linhill Celtic.

Coach Sreten Pavlovic had heated words for his players during half-time, reminding them that their place in the Super League was just as important as playing in the Cup games.

During the second half, both teams displayed flair and hunger for the win.

Despite tempers flaring up between Germiston’s players, the team regrouped and put a stop to selfish passes, which saw Thabang Mohaeka find the back of the net in the 60th minute.

With their 2-0 lead, the home team seemingly had their team spirit back.

The last 15 minutes of the game were crucial as Germiston once again lost concentration and scattered across the pitch after Thabiso Nkosi scored the team’s third goal.

With an open defence, Linhill punished the team with a header straight past Germiston’s goalkeeper, Clement Baloyi.

Baloyi was challenged once again and Linhill scored their second goal.

The matched ended with a 3-2 win for Germiston.

“I think the team lost focus because they were thinking ahead to Tuesday’s Cup game.

“However, they have to remember that every game is important,” said Pavlovic.

“We have to play each game to win, we cannot allow future games to distract us from the current play.”

Jack Takudzwa led the second team to success by scoring a brace.

The final score was 2-1.
