Full contact karate in the spotlight

About 300 athletes competed in a national tournament hosted by Gauteng Kyokushin Kan Karate Organisation.

Gauteng Kyokushin Kan Karate Organisation, of which the Kyokushin Karate Club in Katlehong forms part, recently hosted a national karate tournament.

The event was held at the Tsakane Feranani hall.

The competition saw about 300 full contact karate athletes from Gauteng North and West, the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern Cape and Zimbabwe compete.

Shihan Collen Sedoaba, the Gauteng branch chief, was extremely happy with the number of parents in attendance to support their children, as well as the quality of the competitors, which is improving every year.

The tournament was divided into two competitions, namely kata and kumite.

President of AFCKO (African Full Contact Karate Organisation) sensei Thulane Sibisi (also from Kyokushin Karate Club) was present at the event and was impressed with the participation of women and youngsters.

He encouraged local full contact karate instructors to recruit more members who are in primary and secondary schools to help instil discipline and respect in their communities.
