Member of Elsburg Wrestling Club flies SA flag high in Ghana

Wrestling is a sport for all genders, and Lillian is a reminder of that.

Lillian Mbena, an Elsburg Wrestling Club member, is emerging as a prominent figure in the wrestling arena.

The 20-year-old is making a name for herself and inspiring other young wrestlers in the club.

Her journey in the sport began when she moved to Elsburg aged 14.

Her father introduced her and her younger sister to the sport as it was close to their home, and she fell in love with it.

“I was motivated by a desire for self-defence. I also lived in a world where women constantly faced threats. I wanted to be able to defend myself.

“I found strength in wrestling and the discipline of knowing when to use it,” said Lillian.

She said that through her training, she learnt the sport’s techniques and lessons in respect and commitment.

“Wrestling has taught so much, and not only that, we are like family with my fellow wrestlers,” said Lillian.

The young wrestler recently won a bronze medal at the All-Africa Games in Ghana.

“Despite setbacks last year, I’m proud to have secured bronze in the games. It took dedication and perseverance to lead me to these remarkable achievements,” said Lillian.

Last year, she participated in a developmental tournament in Mauritius.

The club’s head coach, Derick Brewis, said he is proud of how far the wrestler has come and grown in the sport.

“Lillian’s success serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for other girls interested in wrestling. She challenges the stereotype that wrestling is exclusively for boys, emphasising that it is a sport for all genders.

“Her journey from a local club to international tournaments exemplifies the potential for anyone, regardless of gender, to excel in the sport,” said Brewis.

He said her journey had some obstacles, but Lillian pushed on.

“As her coach, seeing Lillian’s growth and achievements fills me with pride. She not only dominates her weight category in SA but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring wrestlers worldwide.

“With her talent, determination, and unwavering spirit, she is destined to leave an indelible mark on the world of wrestling,” said Brewis.

“I have encountered obstacles, including a lack of support and funding compared to my male counterparts.

“Despite facing financial difficulties that prevented me from participating in important competitions like the African Championships in Egypt, I did not allow that to dent my spirit. I did not allow such obstacles to hinder my pursuit of success,” said Lillian.
