Dawnview High crowned athletics champs

Solomuzi Mhlongo, the school's sports co-ordinator, described it as an honour to defend the shield for the second year in a row.

Dawnview High School was crowned the first-ever two-time recipient of the Germiston Athletics Schools Association (GASA) shield plaque.

“We had leaners who represented us at the provincial level of the competition. As a school we are proud to have seen how far we can go,” said Mhlongo.

“Next year we want to have learners who compete at the national level. Learners who made it to provincials are Utale Roy and Reloeahae Kgomotso.

“Bradley Dube and Lebohang Phalane won their individual GASA special awards. Dube won the GASA 2025 junior male top athlete award. Phalane won the GASA 2025 senior female top athlete award.

“We are so proud of our achievement more so because the points were so tight this year and we had less learners participating because we try to exclude Grade 12s so not to disturb their schooling year.”

Mhlongo said as a school they have put more focus to sports as they aim to best all schools in the region.

“We have revived basketball for both males and females. We are planning to revive rugby and hockey for the second term. We are also looking ahead to the cross-country championships.

“The challenge is that we are under resourced as a school. We need training equipment and coaches who have a vast knowledge of the sports we have,” said Mhlongo.

Phalane said she was happy to have won her individual award.

“I manifested it, and it happened. I was over the moon when I was awarded the trophy. It means the universe is rewarding me of my hard work.

“After school I had classes, therefore I only practiced at home. I started participating in school sports from Grade Nine. Now I am in Grade 12. I want to study engineering after matric,” said Phalane.

Dube said winning the trophy shows that there is improvements in his sporting career.

“I was running in 100m and 200m events. I want to continue running and turn professional,” said Dube.

“I am in Grade Nine, that means I still have more years to represent the school, grow and develop as a leaner and athlete,” said Dube.
