Foundation hosts soccer tournament at Primrose High

Sixteen teams will compete during the competition, which will be held at Primrose High School on April 26 starting at 8:00.

The Primrose community is invited to participate in the inaugural annual Primrose Games, a one-day soccer tournament, hosted by the Vusa Umuntu Community Service Foundation.

Sixteen teams will compete during the competition, which will be held at Primrose High School on April 26 starting at 8:00.

Themed ‘Love is the answer’, the organisation wishes to use sports to bring the community together.

Thabile Sibeko, the founder and CEO of the Vusa Umuntu Community Service Foundation, said they hope to see children participating in sports again.

“We intend to hold the tournament every year, and the results of this year’s competition will determine our future course. Our idea is that we want to unite as a community because we can overcome the social evils in our society if we do so,” said Sibeko.

“The concept is Ubuntu, and we really believe that individuals should work together to achieve a common goal.

“We’ve been organising the competition for a month and two weeks.

“We have met three times since March with our collaborating stakeholders, which include the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) sports department, the Germiston Local Football Association, Cogta, and the Department of Sports among others.

“This is a community and joint event, for the benefit of the community in hopes of creating a safer and better Primrose. Teams are asked to pay an affiliation fee of R350 per team. The payments will allow us to combine the prize fees and trophies.

“The first team will receive R3000, the second team will receive R2000, and the third-place winner will receive R1500. Teams will also win various trophies.

“Primrose High was picked since they have two fields that will meet our needs,” said Sibeko.

“The original intention was to have more than one sporting code, but for many of the children, playing in a tournament and winning something is a dream, therefore we want to focus just on soccer.

“This is where talent is spotted; legends of the game were given special attention and fostered. This is why we want to do it on an annual basis, to offer everyone individual attention and allow them to develop,” said Sibeko.

“It is the reason we began with the U16. We want to observe their development and growth. It’s a legacy project; therefore, we want to get it properly the first time.

“It is critical that we, as the project’s collective, humble ourselves in order to grasp what it takes to develop a sustainable and continued legacy.

“Since the foundation’s inception in 2014, we’ve seen it develop into what it is today: a behemoth capable of serving the community to its full potential,” said Sibeko.
