Vryburger 1st rugby team triumphs in Noordvaal finals

Vryburger High’s 1st rugby team celebrated a decisive victory over Maragon Mooikloof to claim the prestigious Noordvaal Cup.

Vryburger High School’s 1st rugby team won the Noordvaal Cup after defeating Maragon Mooikloof from Pretoria in the finals on August 23.

The Primrose side secured a 28-12 victory, leading 21-7 at halftime in the home clash.

The Saturday fixtures demonstrated that Vryburger is not only a top academic school in Germiston but also a force on the rugby field.

The school currently boasts the strongest rugby programme in the region within the league they compete in. All three of Vryburger’s teams reached the Noordvaal Group 5A finals.

The U15 team narrowly lost to AHG, 19-22, while the U17 squad gave a strong performance but fell to Roodepoort High School following a late try.

By 11:30, the pavilion was packed with spectators eager to watch the 1st team match. For many players, it was their final game as schoolboys, and they ran onto the field with sheer determination.

Vryburger opened the scoring with a brilliant individual run, followed by another try created by the forwards near the corner.

Maragon Mooikloof managed a try of their own, but Vryburger’s backline quickly responded, with Phaphama producing a moment of individual brilliance to score another try. Zenodean sealed the victory in the second half with a decisive try.

“Not only was Vryburger’s 1st rugby team crowned Golden Lions winners a month ago, they are now also the proud holders of the Group 5A Noordvaal Trophy for the 2025/2026 season,” said Vryburger High School principal Stephanie Diedericks.

“A well-deserved win under the guidance of coaches Ruan de Lange and Fana Moyo, who independently coach all three teams. Their passion has helped develop about 70 boys into champions,” Diedericks added.

“The weekend will be remembered as another proud day in Vryburger High School’s history, proving once again that the school excels not only academically but also on the rugby field,” she said.

With three teams competing in the prestigious Noordvaal Group 5A finals, Vryburger High has once again demonstrated its depth of talent and continues to be a formidable presence both in the classroom and on the rugby pitch.
