Young Germiston athlete Sandile Mthethwa gears up for CGA Championships
After a year of standout performances, 13-year-old Sandile ‘Duke’ Mthethwa hopes to end the season strong at the upcoming CGA Championships in Germiston.
Sandile Duke Mthethwa aims to end the year on a high note as he prepares for the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) Championships at Germiston Stadium.
The Grade Seven learner at Laerskool Kempton Park was awarded the Victor Ludorum last year, along with other athletes, when the school handed out full service trophies to its top performers.
Mthethwa specialises in the 200m hurdles, 80m hurdles, and long jump, competing in the U13 categories for each event.
Earlier this year, during the CGA Sub Youth Track & Field League, he finished second in his heat in the 200m hurdles.

At just 13 years old, Mthethwa has also made a mark in rugby, having played for the Valke rugby team and received his provincial school rugby colours.
His athletics journey began in primary school and by the age of 11 he had already competed in the club national championships, organised by ASA, finishing third in the 100m and fourth in the long jump.
Last year, Mthethwa was the school’s overall best performer, winning six medals during inter-school events.
He says he loves rugby more because it is a contact sport. “I like the physicality that comes with rugby.
Rugby is a team sport, but running is an individual effort,” Mthethwa explained. “Together with the school team, we have won the school league, and I have earned several Man of the Match accolades along the way.”
As he focuses on his upcoming running events, Mthethwa says his priority is to stay fit and concentrate on the task at hand. “The training has been tough, with little to no time to fully rest,” said Mthethwa.
His mother, Lindiwe Nyathi, has commended him for his efforts and achievements, noting that he has been a bright and determined child from an early age.

“Since his early grades, he always excelled in both academics and athletics,” Nyathi said. “I noticed his love for running and started looking for a coach to help him improve his abilities.”
Nyathi added, “He is heavily involved in sports, and I also secured a private tutor to ensure he balances his academics.
As a parent, I am so proud to see a child whose dedication to sports is matched by his academic achievements. He even secured a scholarship that will cover his fees.”
She wished him all the best in his future endeavors.
