Multi vehicle pile-up claims nine lives

Bodies were scattered across the highway and paramedics were treating patients with minor to serious injuries.

A multi vehicle pile-up on the N3 has claimed nine lives thus far. This afternoon (May 27) Vosloorus Emergency Services received a call for a multi vehicle pile-up on the N3 South bound near the Spruitview off ramp, once on scene multiple emergency services were contacted.

Bodies were scattered across the highway and paramedics were treating patients with minor to serious injuries.

Various law enforcement staff are on scene, including private and provincial ambulances, EMPD, the Provincial Traffic Department and the SAPS.

So far nine fatalities were confirmed and 14 injured patients were transported to various hospitals. One victim was burnt beyond recognition, while another person was trapped underneath a vehicle and had to be extracted with the Jaws of Life. This patient was declared dead on the scene.

At least ten vehicles were involved that include five trucks, a minibus and motor vehicles.
William Ntladi (spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Emergency and Disaster Services) confirmed that the cause of the accident is unknown. Allegedly a nearby veld-fire might have caused limited visibility and could be the cause of the pile-up.
