40-Year-old man from Johannesburg found dead in the veld
"He was lying face down and died from a single gunshot wound to the upper body"
Police are investigating the death of a 40-year-old man from Johannesburg, whose body was discovered in an open veld behind a car dealership in Springs Road. Mcabangeleni Buthelezi reportedly died from a single gunshot wound and his body was discovered by his brother around midday on July 26.
“The deceased was lying face-down. It appears that he was shot from behind and the bullet penetrated his heart. Upon closer inspection, police found a firearm under his body. The firearm is registered in the name of the deceased, but the circumstances surrounding his death is not yet known,” police spokesperson Sgt Nellie Dwaba said.
However not clear why, Buthelezi’s brother claims that he went to Nigel on July 26, after he received information that two suspects were arrested by the police the previous day. He told police that when he was unable to reach his brother telephonically, he suspected that his brother may have been arrested and therefore approached SAPS Nigel to enquire. When he learned that his brother was not detained at the police station, Buthelezi and other family members continued their search and he went to the area where the shootings occurred. That was when he discovered his brother’s body in the veld.
According to Sgt Nellie Dwaba, two suspects were arrested by the police the previous day, following a shooting incident that occurred in the central business district (CBD).
“Constable Ndlovu was on patrol in the CBD around 12:55, when he heard gunshots in the nearby area. While driving in Main Road towards the taxi rank, Const Ndlovu saw four African males running in different directions and set chase. He managed to apprehend one of the suspects, who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm,” Sgt Dwaba said.
When police received more information that the other fleeing suspects were also carrying firearms, the SAPS Trio task team and Vispol members were activated for support. A 21-year-old suspect was later apprehended behind the truck stop depot in Springs Road. According to Sgt Dwaba, he was carrying an unlicensed revolver. Both suspects were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and detained at SAPS Nigel.
They appeared in Nigel Magistrate’s Court on July 29, but the investigation into the death of Buthelezi continues, as Police are looking into a possible link between his death and the shooting incident that occurred on July 25.
