SAPS warns of thieves targeting learners’ cellphones

The Nigel SAPS urge parents to be vigilant following a surge in cellphone thefts from children walking to and from school.

The Nigel SAPS has issued a community alert following a rise in cellphone thefts involving learners travelling to and from schools in Nigel.

According to the police, several thefts were reported in recent weeks, leaving families distressed and learners without their devices.

The incidents mostly occurred in the afternoons as learners walked home from school.

The police said the perpetrators specifically target learners carrying expensive phones, often snatching them from their hands or bags before fleeing.

Safety tips for learners:

• Walk in groups or with a trusted adult whenever possible;

• Keep your phone in your bag and out of sight;

• Ensure the device has a lock screen and an active tracking feature;

• Be alert and immediately report any suspicious behaviour.

What to do if your cellphone is stolen:

• Report the theft to the nearest police station without delay;

• Contact your service provider and block your SIM card;

• To assist the police, try to recall the last place you had your phone.

Safety precautions for parents:

• Walk younger children to school or have a trusted adult accompany them;

• Remind your child to stay alert and mindful of their surroundings;

• Consider providing them with a GPS tracking device or a safety app.

The Nigel SAPS is working with local schools and community structures to address the issue and improve learner safety.

Parents, learners and community members are urged to come forward with any information that could help identify the perpetrators.
