Ratanda Operation Shanela leads to arrests, liquor outlet closures and traffic fines

A high-density Operation Shanela led by Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni in Ratanda on May 14 resulted in the arrest of undocumented foreign nationals, the closure of illegal liquor outlets and hundreds of arrests across Gauteng as police intensified efforts to combat crime.

A multidisciplinary high-density Operation Shanela, led by the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, resulted in multiple arrests and the closure of non-compliant liquor outlets in the Ratanda policing precinct within the Sedibeng District on May 14.

The operation formed part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to clamp down on criminal activities and improve safety within communities across Gauteng.

During the operation, authorities conducted roadblocks and compliance inspections, leading to the arrest of 23 undocumented foreign nationals.

One suspect was also arrested for possession of drugs.

Four liquor outlets were shut down after failing to comply with legal requirements and regulations.

Traffic officials participating in the operation issued 24 fines for various road traffic infringements, totalling R12 100 in penalties.

Provincial detectives also conducted overnight crime-fighting operations across Gauteng, resulting in the arrest of 938 suspects linked to various offences.

Among those arrested were 212 suspects connected to crimes against women and children.

Mthombeni commended the coordinated efforts of the various law enforcement agencies involved in the operation and reiterated the province’s commitment to fighting crime.

“These high-density operations are aimed at restoring law and order in our communities and ensuring that residents can live without fear of criminal activity.

“We are sending a clear message that law enforcement agencies in Gauteng will continue to work together to remove criminals from our streets, close down illegal businesses and enforce compliance with the law.
“We remain committed to protecting vulnerable groups, especially women and children, and we will continue intensifying operations across the province,” he said.
