The Heidelberg Tennis Club recently honoured veteran coach Jack Fenwick with a surprise 80th birthday celebration, recognizing nearly five decades of dedication to developing young tennis players and shaping lives in the community
Members of the Heidelberg Tennis Club recently hosted a surprise 80th birthday celebration for long-time coach Jack Fenwick, honouring his remarkable contribution to tennis in the community.
Fenwick, who has been coaching for nearly 50 years, has played a significant role in developing young tennis players in Heidelberg, mentoring thousands of children over the decades.

Vice-chairperson of the club, Fanie Botes, said the celebration was organised to recognise Fenwick’s dedication and lasting impact on the club and the broader community.
“Jack has been contributing here for many years and thousands of children have been trained under his leadership. We decided to host this surprise birthday celebration to honour him because it is important to pay tribute to people and give them their flowers while they are still alive. We also placed a plaque with his name on the wall to honour his legacy at the club,” he said.
Several of Fenwick’s former students also shared messages of appreciation for the role he played in their lives.
Nadia Peinke said she will always be grateful for Fenwick’s guidance and support during her early years in tennis.
“I started playing tennis when I was 10 years old and he was my coach until I matriculated. It was a joyful experience. He taught us much more than just tennis; he taught us how to be strong players and never give up in life,” she said.

Stefan Botes described Fenwick as a role model who has influenced generations of young people in Heidelberg.
“Jack has been here for basically all of our lives and we have learned a lot from him. He taught us about tennis, sportsmanship and team spirit. He was also a brilliant player in his younger years. We are truly grateful and appreciate everything he has done for the community,” he said.
