Fake job interview advert linked to Ekurhuleni municipality flagged as scam

The City has urged residents to remain vigilant after a fraudulent job interview advertisement, falsely claiming to be from the municipality, began circulating on social media.

The City of Ekurhuleni has warned residents about a fake job interview advertisement circulating on social media platforms.

According to a statement released by the City, scammers are posing as municipal officials and using fraudulent recruitment notices to target unsuspecting job seekers.

The municipality urged residents to verify all employment-related communication through official channels before responding to any job offer, interview invitation or recruitment notice.

The City highlighted several red flags that may help residents identify fraudulent advertisements.

It stressed that it does not use social media platforms to invite candidates to job interviews. Residents should also note that the municipality no longer refers to itself as the “Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality” in official communication.

The City further warned that it does not use cellphone numbers as official recruitment contact details and never requires applicants to pay money to secure employment or attend interviews.

Any request for payment in exchange for a job opportunity should be regarded as a scam, the municipality said.

Residents who come across suspicious job advertisements or recruitment messages are encouraged to report them to law enforcement authorities or contact the City of Ekurhuleni Call Centre on 0860 543 000.

The municipality said it remains committed to protecting residents from fraud and urged the public to stay alert to criminal activities targeting job seekers.
